The Red Thread: Maynard Alley Murals

The Maynard mural panels are finally installed in Maynard Alley. This project was curated by Seattle Chinatown International District Preservation and Development Authority (SCIDpda). Over the summer they hosted a ribbon cutting to celebrate with a dinner at Gan Bei after. I love this restaurants drinks! It’s a great late night snack option if you need a good recommendation. The other artists include Zoulie Deng, Tom Dang of @internationalmodeltoys, Taylor Yingshi @yingshiart, and I. I adored how they all turned out and how each interpretation of the theme are all so unique and tell a story.
I had my nephew Amadeus was visiting me so it was wonderful being able to show him this mural and then explore the area and take him to all my favorite places after. We got bubble tea (his first time ever), corn dogs from Chungchun, and explored the endless aisles of Uwajimaya and Kinokuniya bookstore. We’re both gamers and avid PokémonGo players so we took a serious detour to Pink Gorilla and International Model Toys. We even got 2 pounds of BBQ pork from Kau Kau because it truly is the #1 BBQ pork in Seattle. It’s very important he carry on the legacy of appreciating all the delicious things the CID has to offer.

The theme of the art installation was: “The Red Thread,” which is based on a Chinese proverb– ”An invisible red thread connects those who are destined to meet regardless of time, place, or circumstance. The thread may stretch or tangle, but will never break.”
In my interpretation of 'The Red Thread,' a vibrant red dragon gracefully weaves through the canvas, entwined with the lush greens that symbolize the patterns of nature. This piece is a celebration of the profound concept that an invisible red thread connects individuals destined to meet, transcending time, place, and circumstance. The dragon, a symbol of strength and good fortune, embodies this theme as the very essence of the red thread. It's a representation of life's boundless vitality and the sense of freedom I experience when wandering through the vibrant streets of the International District.
